UAFS coaches offering variety of sports camps

Members of the UAFS athletic department’s coaching staff will once again be conducting a variety of sports camps for children of all ages throughout the upcoming summer months.

The following is a list of sports camps that will be offered this summer.

• Baseball coach Dale Harpenau will conduct three individual baseball camps throughout the month of June for boys ages 6-12 at Crowder Field. Session I will be June 3-5 from 9 a.m. to noon, Session II will be June 10-12 from 9 a.m. to noon and Session III will be June 17-19 from 9 a.m. to noon. Each camper will receive instruction in the fundamental areas of fielding, throwing, base running and hitting. Campers will receive individual instruction from members of the UAFS coaching staff and players. Campers should bring their own gloves, bats and hats. Cost is $80 per camper and includes a camp T-shirt. Camp application forms are available at the athletics administrative office inside the Stubblefield Center or on-line at www.uafortsmithlions.com.

• Women’s basketball coach Louis Whorton will conduct three individual basketball shooting camps for girls in grades 3-8. Shooting camp consists of all phases of shooting the basketball. Each camper will participate in shooting off the pass and shooting off the dribble. The camp staff will stress proper hand position, footwork and follow-through, which will improve shooting technique. Each player’s shot will be videotaped and critiqued by the coaching staff, and each camper will learn 10 shooting drills they will be able to use at home. Session I will be June 5-7 from 9 a.m. to noon, Session II will be June 26-28 from 1 to 4 p.m. and Session III will be Aug. 5-7 from 9 a.m. to noon. Each session will be held at the Stubblefield Center. Cost is $80 per camper and includes a camp T-shirt. • Volleyball coach Jane Sargent will conduct an individual camp on June 17-19 at the Stubblefield Center. Two sessions will be held each day. The first session will be for girls in grades K-7 from 9 a.m. to noon each day. The second session will be for girls in grades 8-12 from 1 to 4 p.m. each day. Cost is $80 per camper. • Men’s basketball coach Josh Newman will conduct two individual skills camps for boys entering grades 1-9. The skills camps will focus on the fundamentals of shooting, ball-handling, passing, defense and rebounding. The first session will be June 12-14 from 9 a.m. to noon, and the second session will be July 15-17 from 9 a.m. to noon. Cost is $80 per camper and includes a T-shirt and certificate of participation. • Men’s basketball coach Josh Newman will conduct an elite camp for boys entering grades 6-12 on June 25-26 at the Stubblefield Center. The camp will be 6 to 8:30 p.m. on June 25 and 8:30 to 11 a.m. on June 26. The elite camp will focus on improving fundamental skills through a college practice format and implementing those skills in 5-on-5 games. Cost is $80 for overnight campers and includes two meals, housing and T-shirt and $50 for commuter campers and includes a T-shirt. • Men’s basketball coach Josh Newman will conduct a shooting camp for boys entering grades 3-12 on Aug. 1-2 at the Stubblefield Center. The camp will be from 9 a.m. to noon each day. The focus of the shooting camp will be teaching shooting fundamentals, action drills and the mechanics of shooting. Cost is $60 per camper and includes a T-shirt.
