Making a charge: Subiaco team members charge downfield with the ball during a soccer match with Dardanelle on April 5. A goal in the second half lifted the Trojans to the win.

On Friday April 5, the Subiaco Academy soccer squad traveled to Dardanelle. The varsity team had a tough first half against the Sand Lizards.

The Trojans worked the ball on the Lizard end of the field for most of the half, but a resistant Dardanelle defense kept the Trojans out of the goal. Subiaco made eight strong attacks to the goal, but were unable to convert the push into a score.

The Trojans defense proved to be solid. Subiaco was able to hold the Lizards to only three attempts to the goal and scoreless in the first half.

Five minutes into the second half, Subiaco was able to score.

Subiaco brought the ball down the field past several Dardanelle defenders and passed ahead to Alex Sharum who dribbled ahead and passed across the field to Mark Liu who took the shot from center to give Subiaco a goal and a 1-0 lead.

Subiaco worked the ball well in the second half. The Trojans had 12 attempts to the goal. Goalie Chris Myers had three saves and the Trojan defense only allowed eight Sand Lizard attempts to score.

“We had good offensive possession, but we need to step it up and finish for a score,” Subiaco Coach Alex Borts said. “We may have been a little off due to the Easter Break.”
