MANSFIELD — Mansfield completed the first half of the 3A-West loop unbeaten with a sweep of Paris on Tuesday.
Mansfield (13-1, 6-0) and Paris (15-12, 4-2) met last year for the 3A state title with Mansfield coming away with the win. Mansfield dropped a five-set loss at 6A Siloam Springs to start the year but has not lost since.
“Paris is a good team and they gave us a tough match,” Mansfield coach April Howell said. “We came out strong, and they’d come back and get a little momentum on us and then we were able to answer it. We need matches like this to keep improving. Paris is really good at blocking and making us cover our hitters.”
Kaylie Pyles led the Tigers with 12 kills and Mallory Ward had five kills. Erin Reano made three kills and six aces.
Reano’s serving got Mansfield on a 10-0 run early in the first game as they took a 11-1 lead.
“We dug ourselves a hole,” Paris coach Wes Davis said. “We had some problems with our serve receive.”
An ace from Ward put Mansfield up 18-3 and two kills from Pyles make it 21-5.
Paris came back as Daisy Mitchell made two kills and the Eagles went on a 7-0 run to close it to 24-15 before Mansfield closed it out.
In the second game, Erica McKay served back-to-back aces as Mansfield took charge, 18-9. Paris rallied again, Jakyra Austin making a kill and two big blocks to pull within 21-15. Mansfield closed it out with Pyles’ kill making it 22-15 and one from Reano making it 24-17.
Symber Weaver had a solid service run early in the third game as Mansfield again got out to a good start, 13-4. Paris got a kill from Mitchell to pull within five at 17-12, but got no closer.
Austin had eight kills and five blocks for Paris and Mitchell had seven kills. Morgan Highfield and Ashley Forbis each made four kills.
“We had some good moments,” Davis said. “Mansfield is just really strong and they keep coming after you.”
