Charly Moua’s 4-yard run capped a 21-point rally that saw Magazine beat Mountainburg 28-25 Friday night at Dragon Field to wrap up the second seed and a home playoff game.
The Dragons had opened up a 25-7 lead after a 21-yard Quency Pixley to Trey Allen touchdown pass in the second quarter.
Magazine (7-2, 6-1) was able to cut it to a 10-point deficit at 25-15 before halftime, but needed help from the Dragons.
The Rattlers moved to the Dragon 38-yard line but Billy Yang was stopped for no gain on a fourth down. Two plays later Lee Simmers recovered a Dragon fumble – one of six Dragon turnovers – and Magazine was back in business.
A 23-yard run by Caleb Shelton got the Rattlers inside the 10 and on fourth down this time Yang got into the end zone. Moua ran for a two point conversion to make it 25-15.
Shelton recovered another Dragon fumble before halftime – Shelton had two recoveries – and Magazine got to the Dragon 28 before a sack, a penalty and three incomplete passes gave the Dragons the ball back.
Shelton rumbled 65 yards on the first play of the second half and Magazine cut the deficit to 25-22 when Jesse Canada scored from the 2 and Layton Robinson added the extra point.
Shelton’s second fumble recovery gave the Rattlers half a field to take the lead but a holding penalty would induce a punt.
Mountainburg strung together four first downs before a Robinson interception ended the threat but the Dragons started their next possession at the Rattler 42 after a shanked punt.
The opportunity ended when Robinson added a fumble recovery to his take-away statistics.
Moua, who led the Rattlers with 151 rushing yards, carried on five of the next eight downs and scored from the 4 to give Magazine its first lead. Moua’s two point conversion pass fell incomplete.
A 12-play drive by the Dragons was interrupted by by a Moua interception on a fourth down in the final minute to complete the victory for the Rattlers.
The Rattlers had fallen behind because they were unable to contain Mountainburg quarterback Josh Skattebo.
A 1-yard run by Skattebo, and point after by the same, gave the Dragons a 7-0 lead.
A three-and-punt by the Rattlers on their first possession set up the Dragons on the Magazine 43 and Skattebo’s second 1-yard touchdown made it 13-0.
The Rattlers got back in it quickly as Moua rumbled 74 yards for a touchdown and Robinson added the PAT to make it 13-7.
Mountainburg answered with Skattebo throwing a 41-yard touchdown pass to Robert Nolen made it 19-7 before the opening quarter ended.
Skattebo would leave the game with an injury shortly afterward but the Dragons still added to their lead as the freshman quarterback threw a touchdown pass.
The Rattlers will wrap up the regular season Friday when they host Decatur. The Rattlers will be looking to wrap up an unbeaten regular season at home against the Bulldogs, who knocked them out of the playoffs a year ago.
