Going into the district tournament, the Paris Eagle basketball team had a lot of work to do in order to earn a berth to the Regional basketball tournament which will take place this week at Elkins.
The Eagles opened district play taking on the Lavaca Arrows and came out pushing the ball and shooting from long distance to take an early lead that they would not relinquish. When the final buzzer sounded, the Eagles had eliminated the Arrows from district play by a score of 61-48.
In round two, the Eagles took on the Danville Little Johns and had to go into overtime to advance to the next round. Thirteen points in the overtime period, including two huge three pointers by Matthew Fitzjurls gave the Eagles a 70-69 win and a chance to play the Lamar Warriors in the semifinals.
Taking on the Warriors on their home court is a tough job for any team. Paris fell behind early in the game and just couldn’t overcome the outside and free throw shooting of the Warriors who beat the Eagles 57-48, eliminating Paris from the tournament but giving them a berth to the Regional tournament this week at Elkins.
Paris will play the Cedarville Pirates in the opening round of the Regional tournament this Wednesday at 5:30 in Elkins. Lamar finished as the second seed and will play West Fork in the first round while Charleston will play Green Forest and Two Rivers will play Elkins.
