Stanley Curtis Smith, 59, of Branch, died Thursday, July 11, 2013, after a battle with lung cancer. He was a Roman Catholic and attended Saint Anthony Church in Ratcliff. He was an Army veteran and served as a Sergeant and Medic during Desert Storm. He also worked as a lab tech at Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith and Booneville and worked as a truck driver.He was born March 10, 1954 in Heidelberg, Germany to Cornelius R. Smith and Billie Jean (Simmons) Smith.
He was preceded in death by his father, Cornelius R. Smith.
Vigil service was held at 7 p.m. Monday, July 15, at St. Anthony Church in Ratcliff.
Memorial Mass service was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, at St. Anthony Church in Ratcliff, with Father Josh Stengel and Deacon Kenny Stengel officiating. Burial of cremains was at 12 p.m. at Fort Smith National Cemetery, with military honors, under the direction of Brotherton Brothers Funeral Home in Charleston.
He is survived by his mother, Billie Jean Smith of Branch; his son, Stephen Smith of Fort Lewis, Wash.; three sisters, Phyllis Oldridge of Branch, Pat Stengel of Ratcliff, and Jeanne Ramsey of Rudy; two brothers, James Smith of Barling and Donald Smith of Peter Pender; four granddaughters.
Honorary pallbearers were his nephews, Ryan Oldridge, Sean Smith, Carl Stengel, Matthew Stengel, Adam Stengel, Jonathan Smith, Nicholas Ramsey, and Jordan Ramsey.
He had a soft-spot in his heart for child victims of abuse, so memorial contributions may be sent to CASA of the Tri-Peaks, Logan County Courthouse, #22, Booneville, AR 72927 or to Mercy Hospice, P.O. Box 17000, Fort Smith, AR 72917 whose caring staff provided his care.
