Br. Matthew O’Meara

Brother Matthew O’Meara, OSB, age 81, monk of Subiaco Abbey, died June 3, 2013. James O’Meara, Jr., was born December 4, 1931, in Iowa City, Iowa, to the late James O’Meara and Mildred Allender O’Meara. He had one brother and two sisters.

James began his college studies in the fall of 1950, but was soon drafted into the military and was stationed in Korea from July 1952 until April 1954. He served as Operations Specialist and infantryman for the 3rd Battalion 5th Regimental Combat Team. After retirement from the military, James held several jobs while continuing his education. In 1977 he entered Corpus Christi Abbey near Corpus Christi, Tex., where he made his profession as a monk on January 15, 1980, receiving the religious name, Matthew. Here he worked on the Abbey farm, grounds, garden, and as a plumber and maintenance worker. When Corpus Christi Abbey was closed in 2002, Brother Matthew came to Subiaco Abbey.

Br. Matthew is survived by two sisters, Sr. Kathryn Ann O’Meara of Chesterfield, Va., and Mrs. Jane M. Marinich of Purcellville, Va.

A Christian Wake service was held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Subiaco. The liturgy of Christian burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2013, in Saint Benedict Catholic Church at Subiaco.
