The Paris High School Band has received what band director Cory Mikel calls a “big honor.”
The band has been invited to perform in Washington, D.C. during the Memorial Day holiday period next May.
The band will perform in a series of concerts held at the World War II Memorial. The group is scheduled to leave Paris on Friday, May 23, 2014 and return to Paris on Tuesday, May 27, 2014.
The trip will cost $800 for each band member and the band and its booster organization will stage several fund raisers to come up with the $32,000 to send 40 band members to Washington, Mikel said. The $800 covers transportation, meals, hotel rooms for three nights and tickets to anything the band goes to.
“It’s a huge deal and it’ll be great for the school, the community and those kids,” Mikel said. “We sent in an audition tape earlier this year. They only ask a handful of bands to perform and I don’t know how many were invited.
“Raising that kind of money will be a lot of work,” Mikel said. “But, I think these kids can do it.”
The band will represent the state on the trip.
Memorial Day 2014 will also serve as a commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the World War II Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944.
A complete program of sightseeing and other cultural activities will be a part of the trip, according to the concert promoters.
