Paris man charged with rape

A 36-year-old Paris man has been charged with rape and sexual assault in the second degree after his 13-year-old stepdaughter told investigators that he “put his finger inside her,” according to incident report.

Chadwicke E. Atkinson was arrested on Tuesday, July 1 and is now free on a $10,000 bond. The rape charge is a Class Y felony punishable upon conviction of 25 to 40 years or life in prison. The second degree sexual assault charge is a Class B felony punishable by between five and 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000.

The girl’s mother told investigators on June 19 that the girl reported incidents to her aunt who in turn reported them to the mother. The mother went to the Paris Police Department and reported what her daughter said, according to incident reports. The girl said incidents took place in June, several months earlier and in Florida, according to incident reports.

The Paris Police Department then contacted the Arkansas State Police.

An investigator with the ASP’s Crimes Against Children Division interviewed the girl and a transcript was delivered to the Paris Police Department.

On June 24, the Paris Police Department then contacted Atkinson by phone and he told an officer he was in a meeting and would have to call them back, according to incident reports. When he called back, Atkinson told the officer he had been in a meeting with his attorney and his attorney advised him not to talk to police.

Atkinson is scheduled to appear in 15th Judicial District Circuit Court in Paris on Friday for a plea and arraignment hearing.
