Jerry Morris, 49, of Magazine is being held in the Logan County Detention Center in Paris pending charges in connection with a shooting death that occurred Saturday night, Sept. 28.
Tuesday, Morris went before District Judge David Rush of Paris. Bond was set by Judge Rush in the amount of $100,000.
On the same day, Prosecuting Attorney Tom Tatum II of Danville and Deputy Prosecutor Brian Mueller of Booneville met with investigators with the Logan County Sheriff’s Office to review evidence in the case. The case was then forwarded to the prosecutor’s office.
Smith confirmed Sunday afternoon that 40-year old Samuel “Bert” Gilbert had died as a result of gunshot wounds.
Smith said a 911 call was placed at approximately 7 p.m. Saturday night and deputies responded to a Martin Loop residence where the deceased man was found in a vehicle.
Booking information for Morris indicates a Martin Loop residence, but the sheriff would not say if the incident occurred at Morris’ home.
The sheriff said several people have been interviewed by Monday and that investigators were in the process of “catching up with some others.”
Smith declined to release other details about the shooting, including what might have precipitated the incident.
