Family Dollar, a retailer with 7,600 stores in 45 states, will build a store in Paris later this year on a site on East Walnut Street, according to an official with the company that builds stores for Family Dollar.
The 8,320-square-foot-store will be built on a lot next to where an O’Reilly’s Auto Parts Store is currently under construction, according to Kevin Keller of Team Development. Construction is scheduled to begin in late August or early September, Keller said last week. Stores typically open 90 days after construction begins, Keller said.
The store, which will cost an estimated $600,000 to build, will employ four to six people full time and there will be some part time jobs involved, Keller said. Keller added that local subcontractors will be employed in the construction.
The company has filed for a building permit and a variance with the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission, Keller said. Keller added he expects the Planning Zoning Commission to take up the requests when it meets in July.
“We don’t expect any problems at all,” Keller said.
Keller also said the company is building a store in Paris because it’s a good fit.
“The way the economy is today, we feel Paris will be a great neighbor for our services,” Keller said.
Family Dollar was founded in 1959 in Charlotte, N.C. The company’s headquarters is in Matthews, N.C. The company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and is a component of the Standard and Poors 500. In fiscal 2011, the company reported sales of $8.5 billion and earnings of $388 million. The company operates nine distribution centers and announced in October that it plans to open 500 stores this year.
