County Clerk predicts low turnout for primary

The Party Primary and Non-partisan Judicial election will take place on Tuesday, May 20.

However, you still have a opportunity to vote early. Early voting started on Monday, May 5 and will close on Monday, May 19. You can vote early at the County Clerk’s office in the Logan County Courthouse in Paris. Hours are 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Monday, May 19.

Voters must show a photo ID before casting a ballot.

As of Monday morning, Logan County Clerk Peggy Fitzjurls said about 250 people had cast ballots early.

“At this time, I’m expecting a low voter turnout for the primary,” Fitzjurls said. “I think we’ll be luck to get 30 percent of the registered voters to turn out. Early voting has been really slow.”

The county currently has 11,451 registered voters. In the 2012 primary election, the county had 10,343 registered voters and 23.36 percent cast ballots.

“Voting will pick up next week, but I don’t know by how much,” Fitzjurls said.

On Tuesday, May 20, polling places in the county will be open from 7:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. Those in line to vote when polls close will be allowed to cast a ballot.
