Authorities waiting on Crime Lab

No charges have been filed as yet in the shooting death of 43-year old Samuel “Bert” Gilbert III.

Jerry Morris, 49, of Magazine was jailed in connection with the shooting that occurred at Morris’ Martin Loop residence on Sept. 28. A weapon believed to have been used in the shooting was also recovered.

On Friday, 15th Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Tom Tatum said the investigation is ongoing.

Logan County Sheriff Steve Smith said Friday it is unlikely charges will be filed until after evidence from the crime scene has been analyzed by the state crime lab. Smith declined to describe the evidence sent to the crime lab.

“Essentially we’re waiting for test results to corroborate or not corroborate what witnesses have said,” Tatum said. “We’re hoping the crime lab can give one version or the other some credibility.”

Gilbert 43, died as a result of gunshot wounds. Smith said a 911 call was placed at approximately 7 p.m on Sept. 28 and deputies responded to the residence where the deceased man was found in a vehicle, Smith said.

Smith has said several people have been interviewed about the shooting.

Bond was set for Morris at $100,000 on Tuesday of last week and but as of Friday he remained incarcerated in the Logan County Detention Center in Paris.

A memorial service was held for Gilbert last Thursday.
