Spring clean up week coming to Paris

The city of Paris will conduct its annual spring clean up beginning Monday, April 21 through Thursday, April 24.

Items for collection should be placed on the curb on the day residents normally set out trash for collection, according to street department supervisor Larry Robberson. Items should be placed well away from utility connections, meters or poles or water hydrants, Robberson said. Robberson also said items should be stacked as neatly as possible and segregated from yard wastes.

While most items can be collected, there are some restrictions, Robberson said. City crews will not collect paint cans unless the paint is water-based and dried. Tires will not be collected.

Also, crews will not pick up oils or filters. Medical waste will not be collected. Fuel tanks, compressed gas cylinders, asbestos, transformers, septic waste, ash or residue, contaminated soil or anything else considered hazardous will not be collected. Air conditioners, refrigerators and freezers can be picked up only if the compressor and all food have been removed.

Leaves will be collected if they are bagged and placed near the street. Brush and limbs will be collected if they are stacked near the street with the clipped end facing the street.

Commercial or industrial items will not be collected. Waste items generated by independent contractors will not be collected, Robberson said. Items will only be collected if they are generated by a resident who is paying a monthly sanitation fee, Robberson said.

Electronics will not be collected next week because they are going to be collected at a later date.

Robberson also said it is against city ordinance to bring in items from outside the city limits.
