The North Logan County Unit of the American Cancer Society will hold its annual Relay for Life fund raiser Friday at the Paris High School gymnasium. This is the 15th year for the event.
The event begins with the annual Survivor Dinner at 5:30 p.m. The relay will begin at 7 p.m. and continue until 7 a.m. Saturday. The luminary ceremony, which honors those who have lost the fight with cancer, will take place 9 p.m. Friday. Luminaries will be sold during the event.
The goal this year is to raise $35,000. Last year the event raised $34,000. The top fund raising team last year represented Paris Elementary School. Kecia Schluterman, chairperson of the event, is confident the goal will be reached this year.
“I think we’ve reached our goal or passed it every year we’ve held a relay,” she said.
There are six teams registered for the event, down from the 12 that participated last year.
“They’ve been raising funds all year,” Schluterman said. “They’ve held golf tournaments, sold Valentine’s Day baskets and Easter baskets and held a 5k.”
The team will spend time at the event walking around the gymnasium. Teams will also stage several activities through the event, Schluterman said. A DJ will also play music during the event.
Although the number of teams is down this year, the number of corporate sponsors has increased, Schluterman said.
“We were able to get a couple of new sponsors this year and that’s great,” she said.
Earlier this week, Schluterman said everything is ready for Friday night.
“We’re just tying up some loose ends right now,” she said.
